Saudadeis a meditation on heart-ache and the process of letting go of someone we have loved. After a romanic relationship ends, we are left with emotional remnants of our former partners. These remnants exist within us in the shape of memories, which we continue to experience for some time after the relationship is over. The woman in my film is experiencing a broken heart and looking for the courage to move forward. One night while out blues dancing, she experiences very intense flashbacks of her past relationship and is overcome with emotion.
Blues dancing is a very intimate partnered dance; two people hold each-other in a soft embrace and express their emotions through body movement while moving in rhythm with the music. I see partnered dancing as a beautiful metaphor for this pattern of connection and disconnection we as humans go through with the people we love. As a blues dancer myself, I experience many wonderful connections with many amazing dance partners on any given night of dancing. Every dance is like a short relationship, and when the dance is over, there is always someone new to connect with.
